Last call – Florida Strawberry winter recipe contest
PLANT CITY, FLA — The producers of Florida winter strawberries are celebrating Fabulous Florida Strawberry Month by sponsoring a national recipe contest for consumers and professional cooks in the US and Canada.
The Florida winter strawberry contest is open to home cooks and professionals nationwide. Deadline is February 28. Categories are Starters & Salsas, Salads, Sweets and an optional photo category via Flickr.
A total of $6,000 in prize money has been allocated for the contest. The objective is to create greater awareness for Florida winter strawberries, the primary U.S. supplier of fresh strawberries from November through April. Contestants are invited to submit as many original recipes as they wish.
Winners will be notified no later than April 5. The co-sponsor of the contest is Taste of the South magazine. Taste of the South magazine is a publication of Hoffman Media, LLC, based in Birmingham, Alabama.
“We are honored to partner with the professional staff of Taste of the South magazine for our first recipe contest. Their expertise and dedication to high quality are a compliment to the strawberry growers in Florida,” said Sue Harrell, a strawberry grower for more than 30 years and marketing director for the Association.
“The support of the magazine is definitely driving interest. We’ve received several hundred entries so far and are anticipating a last-minute rush to meet the cut-off-date of February 28. It seems some of us need the pressure of a deadline to follow through, whether it’s for a recipe contest or turning in an income tax return,” Harrell continued.
Contest entry forms and rules may be requested by writing to Florida Winter Strawberry Contest, The Thacker Group, P.O. Box 4843, Horseshoe Bay, Texas 78657. Please enclose a self-addressed-stamped envelope.
Florida winter strawberries are in the marketplace from November through April. The peak months of the season are December, January and February.
