Rio Star Grapefruit Recipe Challenge
MISSION, TX —TexaSweet Citrus Marketing Inc. launched a new Web site for professionals and home cooks alike to enter and compete for the best of the best Texas Rio Star grapefruit recipes. In addition to an official entry form, contest rules and frequently-asked questions are posted on the site.
The Rio Star Recipe Challenge is the first-ever recipe contest sponsored by grapefruit producers in the Texas Rio Grande Valley. The industry’s exclusive co-sponsor for the contest is Taste of the South magazine, headquartered in Birmingham, Alabama and one of several popular lifestyle titles published by Hoffman Media LLC.
“We’re looking forward to seeing the creative and delicious contest entries using this special variety of grapefruit grown only in the Southern-most region of Texas,” said Lorna Reeves, editor of Taste of the South magazine. “Our readers seek interesting, quick-and-easy recipes that fit today’s busy lifestyles. No doubt, this unique contest will serve up some compelling and tasty winners,” Reeves continued.
Rio Star grapefruit is a special variety of grapefruit. It combines the two reddest varieties – Rio Red and Star Ruby grapefruit. It has an overall blush on the exterior peel with a deep red interior color that is seven to 10 times redder than the popular Ruby Red grapefruit. Rio Star is available in the fall, winter and early spring each year and may be found in grocery stores throughout the US and Canada.
“We are honored to have the support of Taste of the South as our exclusive media partner for the contest. This cooking magazine is distributed nationally and has a circulation of approximately 360,000 culinary enthusiasts. Its focus is on easy-to-prepare recipes with a Southern flair. The contest is open to everyone – professional chefs, chefs-in-training, caterers and, of course, home cooks throughout the US and Canada,” said Eleisha Ensign, executive director of TexaSweet Citrus Marketing, Inc. in Mission, Texas.
There are three recipe categories in the contest – salads, entrees and desserts, and two divisions – home cooks and professionals. Cash prizes of $500 each will be awarded for the best recipe in each category and division. A grand-prize winner from each division will be awarded an additional $1,000. Total prize money of $5,000 has been allocated for the contest. Entries are due by February 15, 2009. Winners will be notified no later than April 1, 2009.
Contest entry forms and rules may also be requested by writing to Texas Rio Star Grapefruit Challenge, 901 Business Park Drive, Ste. 100, Mission, Texas 78572. Please enclose a self-addressed-stamped envelope.
